Ingredients

  • Bourbon: This American whiskey is known for its smooth, sweet flavour, often with notes of vanilla, caramel, and oak. In the Old Fashioned, bourbon provides a rich, full-bodied base that balances sweetness and warmth, making it the backbone of the cocktail.
  • Rye Whiskey: Rye adds a spicy, slightly fruity, and peppery flavour to the cocktail, offering a contrast to the sweetness of the bourbon. Its inclusion introduces complexity and depth, ensuring the drink has a multifaceted taste profile.
  • Angostura Bitters: These bitters are a key component in many classic cocktails. With their blend of herbs, spices, and botanicals, they add a layer of complexity, introducing a herbal, slightly bitter undertone that complements the sweetness of the whiskey and syrup, adding balance to the drink.
  • Orange Bitters: Adding a citrusy, bitter contrast, orange bitters infuse the cocktail with a subtle fruity note that brightens the overall flavour. They complement both the sweetness of the bourbon and the spice of the rye, enhancing the drink's aromatic quality.
  • Sugar Syrup (Simple Syrup): The sweetness from the sugar syrup balances the bitterness of the bitters and the alcohol's sharpness. It smooths out the flavours, making the drink more palatable and rounding out the taste profile.

When combined, these ingredients create a harmonious blend of sweet, bitter, spicy, and fruity flavours, resulting in a cocktail that is complex, balanced, and deeply satisfying.

How To Serve

Preparing the perfect Old Fashioned is as easy as navigating calm seas with a steady hand:

  1. CHILL: Store the pre-mixed Old Fashioned cocktail in the fridge for at least a few hours before serving to ensure it's chilled and ready.
  2. SHAKE: Before opening, give the bottle a gentle shake to awaken its flavours and ensure all ingredients are properly combined.
  3. POUR: Swirl a twist of orange peel around the glass to deposit its oils, enhancing the aroma and flavour of the cocktail. Then simply pour the Old Fashioned cocktail into the glass over ice.
  4. GARNISH: After pouring the cocktail, leave the orange peel in the glass as a garnish, adding a touch of citrus aroma and visual appeal.

Food Pairing Suggestions

When pairing with an Old Fashioned, seek foods that harmonise with its rich caramel, vanilla, and oak notes, as well as its subtle spice and bitterness. Look for aged cheeses to balance sweetness or grilled dishes to complement its depth. Consider citrus-infused desserts or dishes with hints of fruit to enhance its aromatic qualities. By choosing foods that complement these specific flavour characteristics, you can elevate the tasting experience and highlight the Old Fashioned's distinct profile.

  • Aged Cheddar Cheese: The bold and complex flavours of aged cheddar complement the rich and full-bodied profile of an Old Fashioned. The sharpness of the cheese enhances the sweetness of the cocktail, creating a harmonious balance of flavours.
  • Smoked Salmon Canapés: The smoky and savoury notes of smoked salmon pair beautifully with the subtle sweetness of an Old Fashioned. The rich texture of the salmon contrasts with the smoothness of the cocktail, creating a delightful sensory experience.
  • Bourbon-Glazed Pork Belly Bites: Pork belly's rich and fatty texture is complemented by the caramelised sweetness of the bourbon glaze, which echoes the flavours of the Old Fashioned. The combination of sweet and savoury enhances the complexity of both the cocktail and the dish.
  • Dark Chocolate Truffles: The deep, intense flavours of dark chocolate provide a luxurious and indulgent pairing with the rich and robust profile of an Old Fashioned. The bitterness of the chocolate balances the sweetness of the cocktail, creating a sophisticated and satisfying combination.
  • Grilled Steak with Pepper Crust: The bold flavours of a pepper-crusted steak stand up well to the spicy and slightly peppery essence of an Old Fashioned. The charred and smoky notes from grilling complement the complexity of the cocktail, resulting in a hearty and satisfying pairing.
  • Orange-infused Crème Brûlée: The creamy and decadent texture of crème brûlée is elevated by the bright and citrusy notes of orange, which enhance the aromatic qualities of an Old Fashioned. The caramelised sugar crust adds a delightful contrast in texture, while the flavours harmonise beautifully.
